OUR MISSION

EDUCATION FOR A BETTER WORLD

Our mission is ultimately to educate our students to take on the challenge of making our world a better place. For this, they need to develop faith in themselves and others and learn to work together to reach their goals. They need to develop empathy, tolerance, an understanding of the world and an open mind. They need to work on their creativity, problem-solving skills and their ability to communicate their ideas. And most importantly, they have to practice making use of their knowledge to make a difference. This is what we aim at in our daily work, in our projects and in collaboration with companies nationally and worldwide.

THE EDUCATION

THE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Technology is the cornerstone of our program and a fundamental part of the interdisciplinary projects and the internship for our students at companies in Sweden and abroad. Our orientation towards Production Technology is manifested in the specific courses Production Equipment, Production Knowledge and Mechatronics. In the elective courses there is an opportunity to specialize in a certain field, such as technological Design or science. But technology also recurs as a theme in maths, physics and English courses and throughout the three years.

Technology is a lot more than just calculating and drawing. It is also about problem solving, sustainability and issues related to this. Therefore we have projects where we challenge students to find solutions to problems where technology plays an important part. During their first year our students have two more extensive interdisciplinary projects.

In the final year there is a Diploma Project where students use their acquired skills to solve a real problem presented by a technological company.

The projects are also used to practice the students’ presentational skills, both written and oral. For all projects from semester two onwards presentations are always made in front of an external audience, consisting of parents, company representatives or politicians.

In our elective courses we have formed different profiles and together with the other elective courses our students can customize their studies according to their interests and possible future studies at university.

TECHNICAL DESIGN

This suits students who wish to specialize in construction and design, both practically and theoretically. You will become a master of 3D modeling and work with several projects which will include designing, calculating and programming.
Equipment: Robots and calculators!

SCIENCE

The profile for students who think that becoming a doctor is a dream job or that a research lab is the dream workplace. You do labs on everything from molecules to the global eco-system, and dig deeply into chemical reactions.
Equipment: Rubber boots and lab coats!

INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES

The profile for students who believe that politics is as important as technology when it comes to the future of the world. You learn more about how global economics, politics and technology affect society and the environment.
Equipment: A Globe and the will to debate!

YOUNG ENTERPRISE (Ung Företagsamhet)

Young Enterprise (part of the concept “Junior Achievement Worldwide”) takes place during year two. Students form groups to start and run a company during school hours. It starts with a business idea, continues throughout the year with innovation, production, marketing, business plans, competitions and exhibitions regionally and nationally. It is creative, challenging and fun. This interdisciplinary course with entrepreneurship at its core develops students’ skills in many other subjects.

ABB Industrigymnasium has had great success in Young Enterprise competitions, both regionally and nationally. In 2015, the school was named ‘Sweden’s Best School of Entrepreneurship’ by the National Board of Young Enterprise, and in 2017 we were named Västmanland’s best Young Enterprise school.

INTERNSHIP

You learn a lot in school but it is also necessary to create links with the world outside because this is where you will make use of your knowledge. Therefore we have chosen to have two periods of internship at technological companies, one in Sweden and one abroad. The Technology program is a higher education preparatory program and internships are not compulsory but we have added them to give our students a head start. During the internships students can test their newly acquired skills at a company and get a valuable experience of work-life. After the internship some of the students also may get the opportunity to work extra hours or get a job for the summer. All students are given an assignment for the internship to study the organisation of the company and how they work with LEAN and other aspects of Production Knowledge.

THE LANGUAGE INTRODUCTION PROGRAM

In 2016 ABB Industrigymnasium started the Language Introduction Program. Here students who have recently arrived in Sweden study to qualify for further studies at secondary level. The main focus is on developing the students’ language skills. Depending on their previous studies they may also take other courses such as maths, English and science. Students who join the Language Introduction Program at ABB Industrigymnasium are generally planning to go on studying science or technology. To get admission to the Language Introduction Program at ABB Industrigymnasium you do not apply directly to the school. Instead “Arenan” at Västerås Stad are responsible for the admission process.

At our Language Introduction Program we also work with entrepreneurship and we are one of few schools in Sweden involved in Young Enterprise within this program, with our students running their own companies. We see this as an opportunity for students to practice their Swedish, establish a network and develop their entrepreneurial skills.
